Just another poem I liked

THE BEAUTIFUL NIGHT.

Now I leave this cottage lowly,

Where my love hath made her home,
And with silent footstep slowly

Through the darksome forest roam,
Luna breaks through oaks and bushes,

Zephyr hastes her steps to meet,
And the waving birch-tree blushes,

Scattering round her incense sweet.

Grateful are the cooling breezes

Of this beauteous summer night,
Here is felt the charm that pleases,

And that gives the soul delight.
Boundless is my joy; yet, Heaven,

Willingly I’d leave to thee
Thousand such nights, were one given

By my maiden loved to me!

This a favourite quote of mine, from Faust:Now I have studied philosophy, medicine and the law,and unfortunately, theology, wearily sweating, yet I stand now, poor fool, no wiser than I was before;I am called Master, even Doctor, and for these last ten years have ledmy students by the nose–up, down, crosswise and crooked. Now I seethat we know nothing finally. I do like Goethe… good choice xx

This is a Valentine tribute. Thanks for reminder of Goethe, such a prolific writer, craftwork one after the other and I am struck at how this poem’s message speaks today. Beautiful. Thank-you.
